Shravanabelagola

Also known as: Sravanabelagola · Belgola · Gommatagiri

The monolithic Gommateshwara on Vindhyagiri, cut about 981 CE under the Ganga minister Chavundaraya, is the image most people mean when they say "Jain statue" — some 57 feet, carved from a single rock, visible for miles. The smaller hill opposite, Chandragiri, carries the older temples and the tradition that Bhadrabahu and Chandragupta Maurya ended their lives here.

The climb, and what to expect

The Vindhyagiri climb is a stone stairway cut into the rock, done barefoot as the whole hill is sacred — which is the part visitors underestimate, because the granite gets very hot. Go early. Doli bearers are available.

Festivals

  • Mahamastakabhisheka — held once every twelve years, not annually

Festival dates follow the Jain calendar and move every year against the Gregorian one. We name the festivals and do not print dates — check with the trust before you travel.
