A sthanak is a plain hall used by Sthanakvasi and Terapanth Jains, who do not worship idols; prayer, pratikraman and discourse happen there instead. An upashray is where visiting Sadhus and Sadhvijis stay and give discourse — often attached to a temple or sthanak. The two words are frequently used interchangeably in daily speech.
